5 of our Favorite Engineering Quotes

Quotes are great because they often put into words the things we cannot express. That’s why we put together a list of our top five favorite engineering quotes:

“One man’s “magic” is another man’s engineering.” – Robert A. Heinlein

We don’t want to toot your horn or anything, but the things engineers have created seem like magic! How many times have you looked at something and been like, “What creative genius created this?” If you’re like us, it’s been a lot! All the amazing buildings, technology, machines, bridges, etc. were all created by engineers. If that doesn’t count as magic, then we don’t know what does.

“Engineering stimulates the mind. Kids get bored easily. They have got to get out and get their hands dirty; make things, dismantle things, fix things. When the schools can offer that, you’ll have an engineer for life.” – Bruce Dickinson

This one might be our favorite. We are huge advocates about the importance of getting kids involved in STEM courses in school and beyond. After all, the kids of today will be the engineers of tomorrow. This quote urges teachers, schools, parents, or anyone else to have their kids put down their phones, stop playing video games, and start exploring the technology and engineering that surrounds them.

“There is nothing I believe more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering, for a better tomorrow, for all humankind.” – Bill Nye

Another one talking about getting kids involved in STEM-related topics. This quote hits close to home for so many because of who it is coming from – most 90s kids remember Bill Nye from growing up. His science videos were extremely popular, and he is responsible for generating a lot of interest in engineering. Now, he’s passing the torch to us, and we need to inspire the next generation of engineers.

“A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering.” – Freeman Dyson

Engineering can often be like solving a puzzle – you know what the end goal is but trying to figure out how to get there can be challenging. That’s why engineers often have to dig deep and find innovative ways to build their projects. This quote shares that sentiment and reminds us about the creative minds engineers often have.

“Science is about knowing, engineering is about doing.” – Henry Petroski

By no means is this an insult to scientists. This engineering quote simply means science requires tests and research to find an answer to a hypothesis. Engineering is about using creative problem solving to build something that has never been built before.
